Four generations of greengrocers at the heart of Portsmouth market
For more than 100 years, G W Warren & Sons has been woven into the fabric of Portsmouth’s city centre market. Today, fourth‑generation trader James Warren proudly carries forward the family legacy – a blend of traditional greengrocery skills, early starts, friendly banter and deep community roots.
The business began in 1919, founded by George “Satin” Warren after World War I on Portsmouth Market. Over the decades, the Warrens watched the city evolve while building their own place in local history. One early milestone remains a standout family memory: the day they purchased what they believe was one of the market’s very first lorries, a sign of progress and pride that symbolised their growing ambition.
For James, market life started early. He grew up surrounded by traders who felt like extended family, where “Uncle” and “Auntie” were as much about affection as relation.
“When I was a kid, it was one big family… even today, we all look out for each other.”
Early starts, fresh produce and traditional craft
A day at the Warren & Sons stall on Commercial Road begins at 1:30 a.m., when James heads to the wholesalers to select the freshest fruit and veg, delivered by local farmers. By sunrise, he’s back on the pitch crafting a display using old‑school techniques: bold colours, careful stacking, and a strong “flash” at the front to draw the eye.
Quality, presentation and conversation remain at the core of the business. Alongside premium produce, the stall offers £1 trays and a dedicated pound section, helping families stretch budgets while ensuring that no edible food goes to waste.
James’s timeless tip for choosing great fruit?
“Go for the smell – the better they smell, nine times out of ten, they taste better. English strawberries might be smaller, but they’re sweeter, they’re the best.”
A century of change and resilience
Like the city around it, the market has faced huge shifts. Supermarkets changed shopping habits, and COVID transformed trading overnight. During the pandemic, the Warren family launched home deliveries across Portsmouth, helping residents isolating at home and even those with COVID. Their social media presence boomed with tens of thousands of local followers. When supermarkets expanded delivery options, the Warrens adapted again.
Community at the core
Many families have shopped with the Warrens for three or four generations. Conversations matter as much as the produce.
“One customer’s been coming to our family for years — sometimes I think she comes more for the chat.”
And the family stories are just as memorable including the legendary tale of James’s great‑grandfather proudly bringing home a newly purchased horse… straight into the parlour. It promptly kicked down a wall. The family moral: never buy a horse again.
Looking ahead
In 2026, Warren & Sons will be featured in Portsmouth’s 100 Year Market Heritage Exhibition, celebrating the city’s rich market history. James also plans a stall refresh by adding modern touches that still honour the look customers know and love.
Through every challenge, G W Warren & Sons stands as a testament to Portsmouth’s market heritage, community spirit and the relationships built across generations. A true reminder that markets matter – not just for fresh food, but for stories, continuity and connection.
